Home Remedies for Indigestion


  • Fasting completely for one day helps to normalize the imbalance agni or the digestive fire and digests Ama.
  • Mix a half teaspoon of lemon juice, half teaspoon ginger juice and little salt in a cup of water and consume thrice daily.
  • Drinking a glass of warm water once in 2 hours increases Agni and digests ama.
  • Cook 1/2 cup of rice with four cups of water. Add crushed Ginger and salt. Powder long pepper 2-3 and fry it in a spoon of cows ghee. Add this to the gruel. Consume this when hot. This is very light to digest and it relieves colic pain.
  • Asafoetida : Mix 5 g of Asafoetida with a glass of hot water. Add a teaspoon of sugar to improve the taste. It rapidly relieves your system of flatulence and helps in relieving in digestion.
  • Yogurt is very effective remedy for people who have diarrhea and in digestion. Make some crushed cumin seeds and salt in a bowl of yogurt and have it at least twice a day.
  • Add some grated Ginger to a glass of warm water add a teaspoon of honey and sip. One can add Ginger to other forms of tea as well to cure the problem of indigestion Ginger honey combination is the best drink for acid reflux.
  • Carrots are known as power food and can help the stomach get better. In a blender mix a few carrots, a banana and a bit of water. Drink this juice. It will help the tummy absorb all the acids and gas that are causing discomfort in the stomach.
  • Add add to drops of mint oil in a cup of warm water and drink immediately. It provides instant relief from gripping and flatulence.
  • Curry leaves: Wash about 22-25 fresh Curry leaves with cold water and extract the juice from the leaves. In a cup of plain water add one teaspoon of lemon juice and the juice of curry leaves. Add one teaspoon of honey to this blend and always drink this when it is fresh. It relieves nausea vomiting flatulence induced by indigestion.
  • Carom seeds: Mix a teaspoon of carrom seeds with half spoon of rock salt. Consume the mixture with the glass of water. This will instantly get rid of flatulence and stomach disorder.
  • One of the effective home remedies for indigestion is to roast a teaspoon of carrom seeds in a pan. Allow the seeds to cool and crush them lightly. With the rolling pin mixed together with a pinch of salt. It is very effective for stomach pain and provides relief from gas as well.
  • Coriander seeds:  Coriander seeds are known for their anti-inflammatory properties that relieves you from an upset stomach or indigestion further stimulating your digestive process. Coriander consists of an essential oil that detoxifies the liver and increases appetite thereby helping in digestion. Take coriander seeds infused water for about a week to see the difference.
  • Take one glass of warm water, add one teaspoon of lemon juice, then add 1 tsp of Honey, mix it well and drink after every meal. Lemon and hot water with honey is one of the effective home remedies for indigestion.
  • Abdominal massage also helps to relieve indigestion. It loosens the tight muscles and increases the blood supply to digestive system.
  • Take a teaspoon of ghee at bedtime. For most cases of indigestion the main solution that the body needs  to pass feces and clear up the digestive tract is proper lubrication which can often be found in a staple of ayurvedic medicine which is the ghee.
  • You can mix a teaspoon of ghee in a warm glass of milk and have it just before going to sleep.
  • Triphala can ease your digestive tract and have you leave normal again in no time. If you seek a quick and easy ayurvedic remedy for indigestion than grind and have a quarter teaspoon each of the cardamom and coriander seeds twice a day for faster result.
  • Drink coconut water the first thing in the morning. Coconut water contains high levels of potassium and magnesium. This nutrients helps to reduce the pain and muscle cramps. Coconut water is also useful for rehydrating and it is low in calories and acidic content. Slowly sipping one glass of coconut water every 4 to 6 hours could ease upset stomach symptoms.  
  • Drink fennel juice in the afternoon.
  • Fennel seed is another common food that has been known to improve digestion quickly chewing fennel seeds or sipping fennel tea can help soothe stomach cramps bloating associated with indigestion. The herb can naturally reduce stomach spasms.
  • Have lukewarm milk at bedtime with one teaspoon of cows ghee.
  • Chew half a teaspoon of fennel seeds after meals.
  • Indigestion is the common symptoms of pitta aggravation. Fennel seeds, holy basil and cloves are ideal in soothing acid refluxes. These spices also increase your saliva secretion which helps digestion.
  • Ginger is a common natural remedy for indigestion. Ginger contains chemicals called gingerols that help speed up the stomach contractions. This may move foods that are causing in digestion through the stomach more quickly. People with an upset stomach could try adding Ginger to their food or drinking it as a tea.
  • Drinking water : The body needs water to digest and absorb nutrients from foods and beverages efficiently being dehydrated makes digestion more difficult and less effective which increases the likelihood of an upset stomach. For those with digestive issues, it is imperative to stay hydrated. Vomiting and diarrhea can lead to dehydration very quickly. So people with the symptoms should keep drinking water.
  • Cinnamon contains several antioxidants that may help ease digestion and reduce the risk of damage and irritation in the digestive tract. People with indigestion could try adding 1 tsp of good quality cinnamon powder to their meals. Alternatively you can try mixing the cinnamon with boiling water to make a tea. Drink this 2 to 3 times a day may help to relieve indigestion.
  • Cloves contain substances that may help to reduce gas in the stomach and increase gastric secretion. This can speed up slow digestion which may reduce pressure and cramping. A person with an upset stomach could try mixing one or two teaspoons of ground or powdered cloves with one teaspoon of honey once a day before bedtime.
  • Opt for cooling and alkaline liquids and foods. This include fresh coconut, fresh rice based dishes.
  • Astringent and bitter foods also helps in balancing Pitta. Try pomegranate, watermelon, honey, lettuce and mangoes. Include green leafy vegetables split moong dals and grains in your meals.
  • Avoid spicy oily or acidic foods which react adversely with the digestive tract. For example, vinegar, tomatoes, citrus fruits, onion, garlic and chill peppers can aggravate Pitta.
  • Cold milk: The richness of calcium in milk adds in reducing the acid problems and absorbing the acid which has already been produced. It helps in providing instant relief from the burning sensation owing to its coldness.
  • Take a warm bath or apply a warm compress. Heat can help ease digestion by relaxing tension and cramping and alleviating bloating. When you are ready for bed and indigestion strikes, a warm bath will not only help you get ready for sleep but it can also provide in digestion relief fast.
  • Elevate your upper body during sleeping you might feel like laying down and going to sleep, but unfortunately lying horizontal will make your indigestion symptoms worse.
  • When you lie down stomach acid is more likely to travel backward and into your throat where it can cause serious heartburn pain. Use a few pillows to elevate your chest neck and head.
  • To get rid of indigestion at night you should keep the head of your bed elevated avoid late night meals or eating within 2 hours of bedtime avoid exercise before bedtime and avoid alcohol and smoking before bedtime.
